Jasprit Bumrah will miss the first few matches of the IPL 2025 for Mumbai Indians (MI) as he continues recovering from a back injury. He has been out of action since January and is expected to join the team by early April, depending on the approval from the BCCI’s medical team in Bengaluru. MI has three games in March, but Bumrah will not be part of them.
Bumrah hurt his lower back during the second day of the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on January 4. As a result, he missed the Champions Trophy, which India won earlier this month. This is the first time Bumrah has had a back injury since his surgery in March 2023.
In January, when the squad for the Champions Trophy was announced, India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Bumrah was advised by the BCCI medical team to rest for at least five weeks after the Sydney Test. Although Bumrah was included in the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, he still felt discomfort after scans in February and was not named in the final squad. There’s no confirmed date yet for his return to full action.
Bumrah, who is recovering from a back injury, is likely to join the MI squad by April after missing the team’s first three matches, which are scheduled in March.
Mumbai Indians (MI) will play their first two matches of IPL 2025 away from home. They start their campaign in Chennai against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 23, followed by a game against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on March 29. MI's first home match is on March 31, when they host Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). They will also play two matches in the first week of April: one against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow on April 4, and another at home against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 7.
Bumrah's bowling style, which is unique, puts extra strain on his back, making him more prone to injuries. Because of this, the BCCI medical team, selectors, and the team management have to carefully manage his workload and make sure he gets enough rest between series and tournaments.
