IPL 2025: ‘We are going to become the greatest Punjab Kings team,’ says head coach Ponting

IPL 2025: Ponting revealed that he banked on the experienced overseas players to set the right example for young Indian talent.

Ricky Ponting, the new head coach of Punjab Kings, is determined to make the team the best in its history ahead of IPL 2025. He shared his vision with the team, saying that their goal is to win the IPL. He told the players on the first day of training in Dharamshala that they would work hard to become the greatest Punjab Kings team ever, but this will take time and effort.

Ponting also showed confidence in the young Indian players in the team, naming a few he believes have great potential. He mentioned Priyansh Arya, who he sees as a promising opening batsman, and Suryansh Shedge, who has impressed him during training. He also highlighted Musheer Khan for his positive energy, saying that his attitude has been infectious and enjoyable for the team.

Ponting emphasized the importance of the experienced overseas players in guiding the younger players. He believes that young Indian players look up to the overseas players, so it’s essential for them to set a good example. He empowers the overseas players to lead by example and be the role models for the team.

Punjab Kings hasn't made it to the playoffs since 2014, and they finished ninth last year. But with Ponting as coach and Shreyas Iyer as the new captain, they’re hoping to turn things around when the season starts against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
