Police officers in Tuscaloosa visited local businesses near the University of Alabama’s Coleman Coliseum to let them know about road closures and traffic changes on May 1, due to a visit from former President Donald Trump.
Bo Hicks, who owns Druid City Brewing Co., said on social media that a police officer told him parts of 15th Street and Hackberry Lane will be closed for a while that afternoon and evening. His business is in Parkview Plaza, which can be reached from those roads. Parkview Plaza is right across the train tracks from the university and the sports area that includes Coleman Coliseum. Other businesses there include Mr. Chen’s restaurant, Family Dollar, Rent-a-Center, and a bakery outlet.
Police said they just wanted to give businesses a heads-up so they can prepare. Hicks later said that an officer told him they’ll try to keep road closures as short as possible.
For safety reasons, police aren’t sharing exact times or routes. School traffic shouldn’t be affected. The city is asking drivers to stay away from downtown Tuscaloosa that afternoon and evening if they can, and to be ready for possible changes.
Trump is set to speak at a graduation ceremony at Coleman Coliseum at 6:30 p.m. on May 1.
