Masala Games, an indie developer based in India, has released its debut title, Detective Dotson, for PC. The mystery adventure game is now available on Steam and the Windows Store. Detective Dotson places players in the role of Dotson, a detective who aspires to be a Bollywood star. The game is set in a stylised version of modern-day India and blends comedy with classic mystery elements.
Developed over three years, Detective Dotson is part of the Xbox Developer Acceleration Program. It is also compatible with the Steam Deck. The game marks a milestone for Indian gaming, being the first Indian title to support Xbox Play Anywhere. This feature will be available when it launches on Xbox Series X|S later this year.
Masala Games announced that Detective Dotson is also the first Indian game confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2. The game will later be available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S. These versions are expected to release within the year.
Founder and CEO of Masala Games, Shalin Shodhan, said, “After three years in development, we’re finally ready to bring Detective Dotson into the world.” He added, “India is missing from gaming culture and we are on a mission to fix that.”
Detective Dotson will feature post-launch content updates at no extra cost. These include new chapters, mini-games, environments, and a co-op mode. The co-op mode will arrive on PC simultaneously with the console release. Steam-specific features like achievements will be added by May 1.
The game is priced at ₹500 in India and $15 internationally, excluding a 10% launch discount. “We want to be sensitive to how customers view pricing to ensure value,” said Shodhan. He also mentioned that a price increase may be considered after more content is added.
In addition to the game, Masala Games has released Detective Dotson: The Movie, an animated companion film. The company has partnered with select content creators to host watch parties. These parties will feature unique Hindi dubs of the film.
Detective Dotson is now available for PC, with console releases planned for later in 2025.
