IPL 2025: Why Did CSK Retire Out Devon Conway vs PBKS? Gaikwad Explains!

Conway became just the fifth batter to be dismissed in this manner across all editions of the IPL.

Conway was sent back to the pavilion in the 18th over, unbeaten on 69 runs off 49 deliveries, with Ravindra Jadeja walking in after him.

The move, however, did not pay off, as CSK fell short by 18 runs, succumbing to its fourth defeat of the season.

“He (Conway) is more of a timer of the ball, very useful up the order. When you have Jadeja, known for that (finishing) role particularly, you expect that. Conway was still timing it well, but we waited until the end (when he started struggling),” Chennai captain Ruturaj Gaikwad said after the match.

Conway became just the fifth batter to be dismissed in this manner across all editions of the IPL. The New Zealander is also the second batter to be retired out this season, following Mumbai Indians’ Tilak Varma, who was removed in the same fashion against Lucknow Super Giants.

The other players to have been retired out in the IPL are R. Ashwin (Rajasthan Royals), Atharva Taide (Punjab Kings), and B. Sai Sudharsan (Gujarat Titans).
